First-Person Barista POV: Rustic Breakfast Table with Sourdough & Coffee
San Francisco is officially the most expensive city in the United States to convince yourself you need things you don't actually care about.
Every week, I watch customers walk into my cafe who earn $350,000 a year at big tech companies.
They pay $4,800 a month for a glass apartment with concrete floors that echoes like an empty subway station. They lease an $80,000 electric SUV that sits in a parking garage five days a week. They order $38 takeout salads delivered in soggy cardboard containers.
And when they stand at my counter, their shoulders are hunched up to their ears, their eyes are wild with panic, and they look like they are three unread Slack notifications away from a cardiac event.
They earn staggering fortunes, but they are functionally broke. They have golden handcuffs locked to their wrists, and they cannot afford to take a three-week unpaid vacation without experiencing an existential crisis.
Meanwhile, my personal lifestyle burn—living in my sunlit loft above the cafe in the Mission—is roughly $1,800 a month.
I sleep eight hours a night. I eat pasture-raised eggs, organic sourdough, and fresh farmer's market greens every single day. I wear vintage clothes that make fashion editors stop me on the street. And I have never spent a single night lying awake sweating over rent.
Here is the secret: wealth is not what you spend; wealth is what you have the freedom to ignore.
The Sovereignty Equation
Most people treat personal finance like an all-or-nothing deprivation diet: “Cut all lattes! Never eat out! Buy the cheapest one-ply toilet paper!”
That is not frugality; that is psychological misery. Cheapness is pinching pennies on things that bring you genuine joy.
I spend zero dollars on:
- Status Gym Memberships: $280 a month to lift barbells under dim purple lighting? I run the hills of Buena Vista Park and hike the ridges of Mount Tamalpais with friends for free.
- Delivery App Extortion: A $14 burrito that ends up costing $31 after "service fees," "delivery fees," and driver tips? I walk three blocks down 24th Street and buy it directly from the family making it on the grill.
- Fast Fashion Subscriptions: Polyester clothes designed to disintegrate after five washes.
And because I spend zero on that garbage, I have endless resources for what actually matters:
- Sacks of single-origin whole-bean coffee.
- Heirloom Japanese chef knives that will last fifty years.
- Spontaneous weekend road trips down Highway 1 with people I love.
The Sunday Farmers Market Closing-Hour Secret
If you want to eat like a Michelin-starred chef on a shoestring budget, here is my favorite city ritual:
Go to the Mission Community Market or the Civic Center Farmers Market at 1:15 PM on Sunday—forty-five minutes before the vendors pack up their trucks.
Farmers do not want to load three hundred pounds of delicate heirloom tomatoes, fragile French butter lettuce, and ripe figs back into their vans to drive back to the Central Valley.
I walk up with two canvas tote bags and a twenty-dollar bill.
For twenty bucks, I walk away with ten pounds of organic Romanesco broccoli, sweet summer corn, ripe peaches, and fresh sourdough bread. I spend Sunday afternoon roasting vegetables, making big jars of pickled onions, and simmering beans with garlic and olive oil.
My refrigerator looks like a painting by Cézanne, and my total food bill for the week is less than one dinner at an overpriced trendy bistro.
The Real Luxury: An Open Afternoon
The greatest luxury known to humankind is not a designer handbag or a luxury car lease.
The greatest luxury is waking up on a Wednesday morning, looking at your calendar, and realizing that you don't have to be anywhere you don't want to be.
Keep your overhead low. Learn how to cook three simple, delicious meals from scratch. Treasure your friends, ignore the hype, and build a life that feels rich from the inside out.
