In search for the perfect morning routine

September 8, 2026•1 min read•Habit

I used to think a good morning routine meant waking up at 5 AM, drinking lemon water, reading 20 pages, meditating for 20 minutes, and somehow becoming a completely different person before breakfast.

It lasted about four days.

What actually helped was making the routine smaller.

Start with the first hour

The biggest change was simply deciding what not to do.

No Instagram.
No email.
No Slack.

The routine

Why

6:45

Wake up + water

7:00

7:45

No phone

Instead, I try to spend the first hour doing something that requires actual thought.

Usually that's writing, coding, planning the day, or working on something I've been putting off.

The interesting part is that none of this is particularly impressive.

That's probably why it works.

The rule that stuck

I now ask myself one question before opening an app:

“What am I actually here to do?”

If I don't have a good answer, I don't open it.

It's a surprisingly effective way to catch myself before losing 30 minutes to scrolling.

What I'm still figuring out

The routine falls apart whenever I sleep badly, travel, or have an unusually early meeting.

So the goal isn't to create a perfect routine.

It's to create a default that makes the good choice slightly easier.

I'm still experimenting with that.
